ESRC PhD Studentship – Exploring the Social Objectives and Impacts of UK Fisheries Policy

Supervisors: Jeremy Phillipson, Dr Jane Atterton Project duration: 3 years

Project start date: September 2009

This collaborative research project with the Scottish government will explore the meaning, justification and implementation of social objectives within fisheries policy. The research will draw on theories of territorial rural development and multi-level governance and notions of ‘resilience’ and ‘adaptive capacity’. It will consider such questions as: What has been the broad socio-economic impact of recent fisheries policies on Scotland’s fishing communities? How are fisheries and development agencies encouraging resilience and adaptation of fishing communities?
