PhD Scholarship in Geocomputation, Spatial Statistics and Geovisual Analytics – SSGA, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Ireland

June 20, 2009

The National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG, http://ncg.nuim.ie) at the National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM, http://www.nuim.ie) currently has an open position for a PhD Scholarship in Geocomputation on research topic “Spatial Statistics and Geovisual Analytics – SSGA”. The student will be expected to look at a spatial statistcal method, the spatio-temporal Geographically Weighted Regression and investigate how to combine this methodology with Geovisual Analytical exploration.

We are looking for students who have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (computer science / spatial statistics / applied mathematics / computational science / geography / GIScience / geoinformatics), preferably a masters degree and relevant programming/computer skills (or if not, are willing to learn these).

The successful applicant will be provided with desk space, office and computing facilities, travel funding, research training and a supportive work environment. In return, he/she will partake in the full life of NCG, including attending courses and events and providing assistance in the organisation of activities and part-time teaching.

The scholarship is valued at 18,000 EUR per year for a period of four years as a tax-free stipend. In addition, tuition fees will be paid for the successful candidate at Irish/EU rates. Scholarship duration: 1 Sept 2009 – 31 Aug 2013.

Please note that unfortunately we can not provide the international supplement to tuition fees for non-EU students (this currently amounts to additional 5,000 EUR per year, but that amount might increase) and non-EU applicants will have to find their own funding to cover the supplement.

See the following for a brief project description and more information on how to apply: http://ncg.nuim.ie/ncg/funding/positions/ssga.html

Application deadline: 10 July 2009
