Dennis William Moore Scholarship in Astronomy, University of Canterbury, New Zealand

The Dennis William Moore Scholarship was established in 1999 as a result of a capital donation to the University of Canterbury from the Estate of Dennis William.

Eligibility
For a thesis student in Astronomy who has been or will be undertaking observational work at Mt John as part of his/her thesis work.

Amount: $5,000
Tenure: 1 year (Masters) or 3 years (PhD)
Closing Dates: 01 Nov 2011

The scholarship shall be known as the Dennis William Moore Scholarship. It was established in 1999 as a result of a capital donation to the University of Canterbury from the Estate of Dennis William Moore, a Minister of Religion of Hari Hari and an Electrical Inspector. The capital donation was used to set up the Dennis William Moore Fund.

The scholarship shall be awarded from time to time from the Dennis William Moore Fund and is tenable for a thesis student in astronomy who has been or will be undertaking observational work at Mt John as part of his/her thesis work.

The tenure shall be one year for a Masters student and up to three years for a student enrolled in a PhD.

The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising:
i. the Vice-Chancellor, or nominee;
ii. the Dean of the Faculty of Science
iii. the Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The scholarship may be held with any other bursary, scholarship, prize or fellowship unless the conditions of the other award preclude it, provided that the Selection Committee may in determining the amount of the award take into account the number and nature of any other awards held by the successful applicant.

If at any time the Department of Physics & Astronomy is not satisfied that a scholarship holder is complying with the conditions for the award of the scholarship, it may recommend that the tenure of the scholarship be terminated forthwith, and a full or partial refund of fees or emolument paid may be requested.

Applications for the scholarship are to be made on the appropriate form available from the Scholarships Office and shall be forwarded to the University of Canterbury by 5:00 pm, 1 November, in the year preceding the year of the award.
