HIKING FROM OTTERS' HAUNT An informal club of ramblers - who have been together for 21 years - chose a Sunday in early August for their visit to Otters' Haunt. The day started cold and frosty but by the time we were taking coffee on the lawn it had warmed up. Graeme gave a quick talk on the formation of the Vredefort Dome. Then it was off to see features of the Vaal riverbed, which follows the underlying geology of the meteorite impact site. The short walk over, we headed for Leeukop and by now it was getting hot. Fortunately the prevailing northwest wind kept us cool as we ascended Lerukop to look at the marvellous display of friction melt-rock (pseudotachylite) in the quarry. This is the most spectacular example of an asteroid's impact footprint on earth, and is a national heritage site within the Unesco World Heritage Site. We wandered back across the veld, visiting Boulder Koppie where Bushmen hunters and later Tswana herdsmen had occupied the protection of the boulders. Big olive trees provided welcome shade! It was hard to believe we were still in winter. Finally the group made it back to Otters' Haunt for a braai and a short video on the Dome to end the day.
